RIVERTIME! YEEHAW!!

I got a phone call today that the Castle St. Ramp was open.  I called my buddy Jay and we decided to take the boys fishing after school.  The idea was to see if anything was going on in the river and check out the water.  We set out some trolling rigs and began the search. As we cruised the shoreline I spotted some activity closer to the bank and picked the casting rod and four shots later wham a slammer strike and I handed the rod off to the boy and we landed a nice 28" bass.  Several minutes later Jay hit a nice one but the transfer off to his son resulted in a lost fish.  We fished this area for a while with out any more strikes.  We continued the troll about two minutes later wham!  My boy got to the rod first and landed a nice 22" fish.  We continued to troll and ended up with two more fish and casted for a while before we had to go and the boy got a tagged fish.

No Reds or Speckled Trout but who's complaining.

Change In The Weather

Saturday Sunrise

My buddy Ed called me Friday and asked if would like to join him and his kids fishing Saturday. We went and gathered some mullet Friday evening and were ready for the sunrise.  Concerned about all the recent weather (more on that below) and fishing conditions I still said yeah and brought my son along.  We hit a few prime docks and a few creeks and some more docks and got lots of pinfish and small gags and some massive lizard fish on the quick made double drop rigs (aka chicken rigs).  Great fishing time for the kids with plenty of pinfish action but no game fish were to be found.

Wow! What a week.  It all started last Monday with 10" of rain and over the next four days a grand total of 22.5" in Wilmington and surrounding areas.  Tropical storm rains and wind from the Caribbean dumped it on us for four out of the five days this past week.  Big surf and howling winds churned the up the ocean and created and sandy brown color to the surf zone and 22+ inches of rain made Wrightsville Beach Sound look much like the Cape Fear River.  As the tropical event pasted the surfing was great most of Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Head to Overhead surf but the fish activity along the surf zone disappeared.  There had been Spanish and Albacore cruising the surf zone and reports of some nice schools of Red Drum being spotted along all the barrier islands.  To make matters worse a Canadian High Pressure system dropped in behind the Low and now mornings are in the 50's and highs in the upper 60's.  Beach water temperature fell from 80 to 77 degrees Saturday morning and now Monday the 4th of October beach water temp  is 75 degrees.  Now we just have to wait and let the fish get back into the groove of Fall.
